Prevention - Planning and Evaluation

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) are committed to providing tools that enable prevention practitioners to provide effective science-based programs and services.

SAMHSA's Prevention Platform (replaces the Prevention DSS and PrevTech) is a free online guide to its Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF). The SPF includes five critical steps to the successful implementation of prevention approaches:

Assessment of Needs and Resources
Capacity Building
Strategic Prevention Planning
Implementation of Identified Prevention Strategies
Evaluation of the Plan and its Implementation.

The Prevention Platform operationalizes the Strategic Prevention Framework by providing tools to:

Assess needs, readiness and resources
Do strategic planning and infrastructure development
Identify and select relevant evidence-based prevention approaches
Plan implementation of prevention approaches
Conduct evaluations that measure process data, project progress, outcomes and impacts

In addition, the Prevention Platform also contains:

Geo-mapping tool
Directories and guides of evidence-based prevention approaches
Readiness Roadmap planning tool
Measures and Instruments Repository
Extensive array of training courses and curricula
Prevention glossaries
